Log 12 - Harvest Empty
PostSubject: Log 12 - Harvest   Log 12 - Harvest EmptySun Jan 09, 2011 6:43 pm

(( This is the log from last Saturday that we are continuing from. Nar and Ori, feel free to jump in whenever too ^^ ))

Shaiyat had been rather quiet for most of the trip once they drew nearer to Harvest. It'd been a long three week trip to get there, and the bigger the chance of them running into trouble the more jumpy the pilot got. The last week he hardly left the cockpit at all, or slept for that matter. Anyhow, they were far off the grid now. Shaiyat swore space got colder out this far, and darker to boot. Javan on the other hand was the opposite. He was friendly, open and usually could be found play some little tune on his guitar in the mess hall. He helped out with most of the more mundane tasks including dishes, laundry and the like. The ship made it without any big problems, little glitches that Nar could certainly patch up until they were in more civilized space. For the first time in weeks the entirety of <i>Vega</i> shuddered, the constant hum of the engine increasing throughout. The ship shook again, certainly enough to knock things around as Shai sped up some to compensate for breaking through Harvest's atmosphere. “Might want'ta hang on...” The pilot announced over the comm system a bit too late. “We'll be land bound soon enough.” It was a rough ride through the small moon's sky, but the pilot did the best he could to keep from knocking the crew around...too much. The roller coaster ride through the wind ended with a thud, >Vega's landing gear coming out with a loud creak and another vibration through the ship before she came to a stop finally...the engine's whine slowly dieing out. “Sorry 'bout that...” Shai apologized over the comm system before he finished shutting everything down.

[Quinn] Three weeks had passed since the crew left Bellerophron behind. Although going into Reaver territory caused some tension on board, everything went smoothly, and they had yet to so much as see one of the macabre ships. Quinn's injury was healing quickly and she was back to walking without the support of her crutch, the new leg from Nar seeming to improve her balance and strength. The growing season had just ended on Harvest, the patchwork landscape reduced to a dusty brown color. The weather had been particularly cruel this year, hot winds tearing soil from the earth once plantlife was no longer acting to anchor it down. Several dust devils could be seen from the air as the Vega made its final approach. Farmland opened up into a golden meadow-scape, the tall, burnt grass dancing rhythmically with the wind. Coordinates lead the ship to the far side of the moon, away from the majority of civilization, to the point where it may seem as though the directions were a mistake. At the foot of a small grouping of hills sat a tiny village, crude houses sheltered from the sun by a scattering of tall willows. A small stream ran through the establishment, a handful of people and a small herd of goats completing the scene. It appeared an unlikely place for Dupont's supposed rebel clan, but the spot coordinated with the directions the crew had been given. The grass around the village had been completely stomped down, the ground beneath it glinting oddly in some places. Quinn made her way to the cockpit after landing and peered out at the little scene skeptically. “This right?” she questioned, the answer coming a second later as a rough male voice filtered in through the comm system. “State your business, Firefly.” Quinn quirked a brow, again looking out at the village. Most of the people had vanished save two men standing guard on either side of a small house on the outskirts.

XinTou was sitting in the sickbay, focusing very intently on something. Something small. He looked as if he were applying sutures to a small animal. But when someone got closer, they'd be able to see that the doctor was, in fact, mending a small tear in one of his dress shirts. Although the sight looked hilariously domestic, he was far from Suzie Q. Homemaker. Although he was making an earnest effort of it, he seemed inept when it came to simple sewing. No matter what he did, it looked like his shirt had suffered an injury and was getting stitches. Heaving a frustrated sigh, he reached for the seam ripper and undid his work for about the third time today. However, other than that, the doctor seemed relatively unstressed, although he was thinking about something. He was relaxing in his white tank top and black slacks, and his hair had been left to its corkscrewy devices today. That, combined with his still smooth face from Halloween, made the doctor look uncomfortably younger than he usually came off.
His ever-tired eyes were the only dead give-aways. "Tzao gao!" He cried out as he stabbed himself with the needle due to the bumpy landing. In a couple of minutes, he headed up to the Vega's cockpit, sucking on his index finger. "Someone please tell our fearless pilot to give us a head's up next time, plea-?" Oh. Grown-ups were talking.

Kasai had kept quiet for most of the trip, aside from the occasional chat with the friendly crew members, and had spent the majority of his time either exercising or meticulously cleaning the seemingly endless arsenal of weapons he had stocked in his room. Blades had been sharpened and polished; pistols had been taken apart, cleaned, and put back together; and he had even been working at what one could only explain as light body armor for part of the trip. Currently he was slowly polishing down the barrel of rifle, the various pieces of it laying about on the bed he never slept in. Then the ship jerked once. That was all right, nothing had moved. He continued through the motions, not expecting the secondary bump and the many that came afterwards. Normally graceful in a bumpy ride, the merc couldn't help but yell out as he toppled over and all the small parts of his rifle slid off the bed and onto the floor. "Jigoku no noroi watashi!" He pulled himself up, placing a hand on his forehead where he had smacked himself on the bedpost. He glanced in the mirror, removing his hand and revealing a large red spot. "Oh come on!" His voice echoed towards the cockpit. "This better not bruise, pilot!" He shook his head and slowly began to search for the many tiny pieces of his rifle that were now mostly hidden underneath the very same bed that had just tarnished his devilish good looks for the day.

Shaiyat flicked a few switches above his head, squinting his one eye at the largest screen in front of him, the back out of the cockpit's large windows...and back again. “Number's are right Quinn...not much else looks it. 'less we're pickin' up a different kinda kid...”He chuckled a little, nodding towards the distant herd of goats. He seemed just as confused as the captain until the voice broke through the speaker. The pilot jumped some in his seat before he leaned forward, mashing the near-by button as he answered. “Prior business. Picking up transport. Looking to send something?” The pilot figured that was a safe enough answer, seeing as they were on a ship made for such things. He sent a concerned look Quinn's way as he let go of the speaker. “We can always high-tail it out if we find ourselves in the wrong spot...” He tried to sound more reassuring as Xin entered. “Rougher entry than I figured...” He sent an apologetic smile the doctor's way just in time to hear Kasai's muffled yelling from his room down the hall. He laughed a little. “Much rougher I guess....”

Quinn glanced distractedly back to the doctor when he entered. “Yer in charge, Xin, til Shai and myself get back from meeting-” The captain had yet to finish when another voice came through the comm system, this one female and with a hint of power behind it. “All crew will exit and present unarmed. Your cooperation is recommended.” A small red light on one of the control panel screens lit after the woman had finished, accompanied with a warning bing! notifying the crew they were being targeted by seemingly invisible weaponry. “...What in the hell is goin' on?” Quinn demanded to no one in particular, appearing a little startled. “This turns out to be another gorram Brown I'm gunna kill those two.” This time it wasn't an empty threat – there would be hell to pay for Kelsey and Maysen if this went south, which seemed likely. The red light flashed for emphasis. Quinn looked about ready to explode with frustration as she leaned forward and spoke to the woman on the other end. “This is Driscol, captain of the Vega. No way I'm riskin' my crew til I know we're friendly. Just here to pick up with Dupont wanted. Meet me out 'n we'll talk.” No answer came but the warning light stayed lit. “Slightest hint of trouble, fire her up 'n get out of here.” Quinn made her way down to the cargo bay, keeping her pistol and knives where they were.

XinTou waved off Shaiyat's apology, having only been kidding in the first place. He folded his arms across his chest as he listened to the pilot and the man in the speaker converse tersely. Then, suddenly, he was in charge. Then, suddenly, he wasn't. At the authorative female's voice, the doctor's eyes widened and he looked as if he shared Quinn's sentiment of "what the hell". His hands automatically began to reach for the back of his head, out of habit of hearing the "weapons are being are being aimed at you" noise. He looked to Quinn apprehensively. "Need a strong male presence by your side? Or, in lieu of that, a moderately not weak male presence?" He wasn't going to pretend that this whole thing wasn't somewhat discomforting, but it bothered him a lot more to see Quinn go out by herself. When she didn't respond, he slid quietly after her, perhaps even going unnoticed.

Kasai didn't have much time to search for his rifle parts, as the hairs on the back of his neck stood up at the resounded silence that followed the overly rough landing. He made his way to the ladder out of his room, peaking his head out the open door as Quinn passed. "- the hells is goin' on, <I>capitaine<i>? Get another sour deal?" He rested his arms on the floor, propping himself up as Xin slithered past after the captain. The merc shook his head, not planning on going after the woman since that's not what he had been tasked with doing. Never the less he threw on his jacket and armed himself, looking quite ridiculous as he moved towards the cockpit to try and get an idea of what was going on. He stood quietly behind Shai, wearing nothing but his jacket and a pair of brown slacks. After a moment of scanning through the windows, he spoke solemnly to the pilot. "I hope your friend's golden gabber can get them to turn their guns off before this heap of scrap becomes just that."

Shaiyat's calm was broken by the sound of the ship's weapon tacking system going off. The pilot had made sure to have such installed as it did them little good to have weaponry on Vega and no idea when to use it. Or where to shoot. Anyhow, as soon as it went off the pilot's face fell. “Think we're in the right spot.” He mumbled before tapping at the view screen in front of him and trying to pin point just where they were being targeted from. The captain being on edge just put him even more so. But he was going to stay in the cockpit and be useful this time damnit! “You won't be down there without guns, alright Driscol?” He called out as she moved away, nodding towards Xin earnestly as well even if Quinn gave him an answer. The doctor had proved himself adept in these situations in the past and he felt better knowing she wasn't going alone. The woman on the other line sounded intense...about that time Kasai came in. The pilot gave him a quick wave, not taking his eye off the screen in front of him. “This heap of scrap has three cannons on 'er...” He answered almost absently at first. “ They ain't the only ones with guns.” He frowned, motioning towards the co-pilot's seat. “Why don't ya plant yerself there? May need a hand if this does get ugly. Just trying ta pick up a kid...things are so crazy any more everyone's gotta shoot first and ask later.”

Ori woke to a very unfriendly voice. The jostling of the ship didn’t wake her, Shai’s announcement didn’t wake her, but the hint of the unfriendly voice echoing in her room caused her to bolt upright in her bed. She sleepily got up, grabbed Bessie out of habit rather than necessity, and grumbled her way up the stairs. She leaned against the door of the cockpit upon arrival, peering over at Kasai and Shai. “Wha’s goin’ on, guys?” The jeans and shirt she’d fallen asleep in were crumpled, and her tight curls were braided securely down her back, although a few ringlets had popped out and gave her an unruly look. Were anyone else waving a gun around, half asleep, it probably would have been quite frightening (and probably still was), but Ori retained control over the weapon even in her semi-conscious state. She was noticeably shaking more than usual, giving the impression that her entire body was vibrating.

Nar had been quiet too. He was chatty enough when he was around the crew, but he had dedicated himself to the repair and maintainence of the Vega with a seriousness that just... wasn't like the way he'd been since his last venture with the crew two years ago. Something was still nagging at him, and he'd been wrestling for weeks on where to begin if he was ever going to explain himself to the crew.

The journey had been largely uneventful, apart from one notable incident. Angel had kicked up a fuss once Nar had let slip that Quinn was up and about from her injury. She was more civil than her track record led Nar to believe during the meeting though. She wished to visit Solace, a moon some way from their destination but still in the deadly rim space. An old abandoned Alliance lab was apparently on the surface, the place where Angel had originated from. It was completely deserted, she swore, and she only wished to have it salvaged. Any parts, data and other supplies would be shared with the crew. However no other details could be pried from the cagy computer. The eventual descision was made that they -might- perform the salvage -after- picking up the package, and that they would review following a success or a failure. That left Angel quietly fuming, but she had complied.

At the time of touchdown, Nar had been in the middle of one of many patch jobs on the engine. Infact, he had his head and shoulders practicially inside it when the late warning came through the speaker.

"Oh Sh-!"

It was a few moments before the pain hit, and it gradually dawned on him he was lying on the engine room floor. The voices filtering about the ship sounded like they were coming from underwater, he gently touched his head where it hurt the most. "Ow..." The mech pulled himself upright, burning his hands on the engine in the process and staggering out of the engine room, leaving his shirt behind too. Well it *was* hot and sweaty in there. Shai's apology came through the speakers as he lurched through the common area, looking for someone to compain at. He poked his head into the medical bay, then grumbled and moved off, stumbling into the cargo bay. He was shirtless, covered in grease and sporting a rather fetching shiner around his right eye as well as a few grazes, cuts and small burns on his face, chest and arms. That tends to happen when you fall into, and then out of a firefly's engine as it lands.

"Someone wanna tell me what the hell's happening?"

He then seemed to wake up a bit, perhaps jostled by the tense air of the others in the cargo bay. "I'll get my gun." He added, sloping off to the stairs to visit his room unless he was called back.

Quinn mumbled something about staying inside as Xin followed her from the cockpit, though it seemed half-hearted. She knew escape would be a little difficult depending on what was trained on the ship and how the outcome of this little meeting went. A woman exited from the guarded house and walked briskly toward Quinn as soon as she and the doctor stepped outside. Standing less than five feet tall, the AK-47 resting in her arms was about half her height – despite this, the woman held an authoritative air and was likely to be the owner of the voice heard a minute earlier. Long black hair was tied into a braid and matched the dark leather outfit she wore, and she had a light olive complexion. As she neared she attempted a little smile, though the expression never touched her dark eyes, which scrutinized the pair before roaming over the ship.

“I want everyone out here, unarmed. This doesn’t need to be unpleasant... if you comply and if I deem you fit to transport my son, we’ll send you on your merry way...” The woman continued looking over the ship, her expression lacking the disappointment clear in her voice. “After my mechanic has a look.” It was then Nar graced the scene with his presence, his mumble about fetching a gun reaching the woman’s ears and disturbing her last bit of patience with the situation. She fired a single shot which pinged on the metal at the mechanic’s feet, hopefully halting his progress. Although the scene behind her still appeared abandoned, three small, red lights were suddenly trained on Nar, Xin and Quinn’s foreheads.

“Now that I have your clear, undivided attention, Captain Driscol… get rid of your weapons and call your crew down.”

Quinn turned, her expression darkening moreso than it already had when she noticed the circular light on Xin's forehead. She walked toward the nearest comm unit and pressed her shoulder into it, her pistol and the few knives that were visible tossed to the floor. "Everyone report to cargo bay unarmed."

The woman, meanwhile, sighed impatiently as she waited. Dark eyes eventually wandered to the doctor. "Does anyone on this ship have experience with children?" she asked hopefully, her voice friendly enough despite the situation.

(( Apparently I have no sense of direction, so we’ll pretend Ori was just somewhere around the ship. Wandering. Or something. ))

Oriana, upon hearing Quinn’s voice, hurried back to her room and carefully replaced Bessie in its holster. She was more than a little nervous about leaving the weapon behind, but trusted Quinn enough to go in this situation without her trusty pistol. She quickly changed her shirt into one less crumpled and took the band out of her hair, shaking her curls out of the braid.

Ori skipped down to the cargo bay. She took in the scene; seemed like the crew was unarmed an outnumbered. If this turned sour, they’d be the ones to lose that particular scuffle. She came to stand next to Shai and grinned up at him, seemingly unconcerned. “G’day to you, fine sir,” she said. Her tremors were still violent, always worse right after waking up, but they were so fast that one would have to really concentrate to see them, also Shai, being close in proximity to the small merc, would certainly notice them. She then looked to the woman in front of the group, and patted her pockets to show she was weaponless. At the lady’s question, Ori gave a small, shy wave. “I got experience,” she said, if the lady gave Ori an indication that she could speak. “Grew up with more brothers an’ sisters than I could count, and cousins besides.”

Shaiyat jumped at the sound of the captain's voice came over the ship's comm system, curing under his breath. The Quinn he knew would never ask everyone to come down unarmed without a fight...unless it was a fight she knew they'd lose. The pilot reluctantly left the cockpit at Quinn's command, waving for Kasai to follow if he was still there with him. He paused only to stop at his room, knocking loudly on the door before cracking it open and calling down to his twin. "xǐnglái luán xiōngdì kěnéng yǒu máfan..."
The pilot had insisted that Javan stay in his room during the trip, and made sure his brother kept his word about being helpful. By all appearances Javan seemed to be just that, doing laundry and cooking to help out. He was social but not to the point that he got in anyone's way. He seemed to enjoy Ori's company the most, and he did keep his promise to sing her a song or two about cowgirls. Between him and Shai he certainly seemed more concerned about his appearance, but once he emerged from the room he looked every bit like his twin in terms of dishevled hair and clothing. "Jus' what's going on?" He mumbled sleepily, stumbling in line behind Shai and trying to smooth his hair a bit.

"Dunno, but it ain't good if Quinn don't want us ta bring weapons with us. Jus don't say nothin' alright? " The pilot made his way outside with the others, finding himself next to Ori. Javan on his took the spot at her opposite side. Shai tried to offer a smile in return to Ori's welcome but the expression hardly met his eyes. His worry was plastered all over his face, trying to catch Quinn's eye before his attentions went towards the short woman with the rather large gun. Great. The tell-tale lights from unfriendly weapons that danced on the others foreheads weren't much a comfort either.

When the question of child-sitting experience came up Shai moved to echo Ori's reassuring words with his own...but was interrupted by his twin who wrapped an arm casually around Ori's shoulders and sent their captor a winning smile. "I have plenty of experience as well, ma'am. Between all of us I'm sure we've had a hand in rearing at least a dozen children of all sorts of age. You should lay your worries to rest." He gave a slight bow, blue eyes flicking towards the gun as well. "Ma'am." He added, just for good measure. He managed to keep a smile even after Shai elbowed him in the ribs, a quick hand sign begging him to keep quiet before he looked to Quinn once more. His eye focused on the red light on his friends forehead, clenching his fists at his sides to try and hide that he was shaking almost as bad as the little merc he stood next to.

"Kelsey asked us ta come, wouldn't have if he didn' trust us." Shaiyat offered as a plea in their favor as well, leaving out the possibility of Maysen's involvement in that decision. He knew dropping the name of his brother would do them little good. Maysen was seemed to get on everyone's bad side. He hoped their resemblance wasn't noticed and cause her to judge him because of it.

Translation (With high possibility that my english to chinese may be wrong) : "Wake up brother, we may have trouble..."

Nar stopped dead on his way to the ladder as the bullet pinged off the paneling by his feet. "Ho-o-o-ld it!" He shouted, throwing up his arms and standing there, fear and adrenaline pumping through him from the shock of the report. He tried his best to look like he hadn't just been badly scared, standing with his arms up. "Sheesh, okay, can I at least get a clean shirt? And maybe a bandaid? Or twenty?"

He shut up after those objections, watching this woman with an uncomfortable expression as she scrutinised the ship, shooting Shai and his brother a look as they both appeared in view, then looked back at the others.

He wasn't about to keep quiet for long though. "Hey, this boat is pefectly alright. Right, Captain?" He exclaimed darkly. It was an automatic response, as things were not entirely peachy down in the engine room. Most of it was fine, but one of the type four energizers was on the way out. And he would be very suprised if these backwater yokels had any of -those-. It would hold for the trip home, though, he hoped. Besides, it was the sort of thing that alliance base that he told the captain about would have. Or something close enough to it that he could rig into the ship.

He sighed a bit as she asked about children, and waved his raised hands a bit. "I probably still am one, if that helps..."

He got the impression the strange woman's opinion of him was dropping every time he opened his mouth, but it didn't stop him talking.

The merc stood still as the pilot made his way out of the cockpit, his eyes trained through the viewports at the woman wielding the gun outside. He shook his head as she fired a warning shot, probably deserved but still unsettling. He took his jacket off and hung it on the back of the co-pilot's seat, as well as pulled a dagger from a hidden sheath under his slacks. He placed the fine-looking weapon in the chair and turned to make his way outside.

He was the last one there, arriving a about thirty seconds after Nar did, although he hadn't taken the time to get any extra clothing.
He stood slightly away from the rest of the crew, his arms crossed. Wearing nothing but brown slacks, a pair of sunglasses, and the wrapping on his right arm, Kasai would pose for an odd addition to the rest of the crew. As he glanced at his companions and noticed the sighting lasers trained on them he immediately began looking in the distance for glints of light, or any other hints of where the guns were situated.

He kept his mouth shut, deciding he wouldn't need to talk unless he was addressed. Clearly he was just outside as a show of faith, to prove no one was hiding inside the boat. Truly he couldn't care less about the situation, that is until he caught a subtle scent in the air.
A sweet and luscious aroma that at one point had been all to familiar to him lightly caressed his nose, causing him to lose focus for a moment. The scent would be barely noticeable by any of the other crew, the only thing allowing Kasai to notice it would be his heightened and well-trained senses coupled with his familiarity with this particular smell.
He gazed at the complex behind the woman for a moment, almost longingly, but then looked back to Quinn.

"I hope, mon capitaine, for all our sakes, that you're getting us involved with these militants only to transport this child and nothing else." His words came out calm and concerned, which was the truth of what he felt over the matter. Kasai knew the comment wouldn't go over entirely well, but figured since he wasn't being rude or combative it would slide without much more than an angry look.
He turned his head to the complex once again, gazing at it once more. He took in a deep breath, enjoying the faint smell lingering in the air.
He knew who was inside, and it bothered him. He knew she was there, and he knew what kind of people she dealt with. He knew he couldn't face her yet, but every ounce of his being wanted to see her again.

Carmela Renato eyed Ori after her response, pointedly watching the girl's limbs shake. Her expression remained blank for several seconds before a brief, fake smile tilted the sides of her mouth. The expression appeared again as Nar started in on being a big kid, himself. "Comforting," she said, turning the look Quinn's way, who had just started to change the subject onto what the Vega needed when Javan ventured in to praise his child rearing experience. It wasn't so much what was said as what Carmela saw in the man's features, Shaiyat's relation to lovable Maysen obscured because of the patch and scarring. She laughed a little after Shai attempted to win her over with mention of their job contact. "My husband's judgment is something to be desired." Carmela squinted her eyes. "Relation to Maysen? You all look so much alike." The muscles in Carmela's jaw flexed by the mere thought of the man. Considering the urgency of the situation she had almost expected Kelsey to send someone worth while.

Quinn, meanwhile, sent a long, dark look Javan's way in hopes of silently translating the need to shut up. As predicted, the same look drifted to Kasai after he offered some advice - after a brief, initial look of bewilderment. Why now, with the creepy? "I hope for yer sake you shut yer mouth, Kasai... and y'all can follow suit," the captain added, referring to all of her rag-tag crew as she shifted her weight and generally looked annoyed.

Carmela stared at Kasai, his warning lighting her curiosity. "Familiar with our work?" she asked sweetly.

In an effort to move onto greener pastures, Quinn interrupted the last of the woman's statement. "Kelsey mentioned repairs bein' part of the cost of transporting yer son. Nar's the one to talk to on that." She thumbed toward the shirtless redhead. "The doc 'n Oriana will take on Skywake, 'n I suppose you and I need to iron out details..." Quinn trailed off, again turning a dark look Kasai's way to warn him to leave the subject alone. Carmela was still staring at the mercenary, awaiting his reply.

Far too many people filed out of one of the nearby structures, all well-armored and very unlike the townsfolk, now peeking out from behind their doors to catch a glimpse of the strangers. On account of the fairly barren landscape Carmela's base was seemingly underground. After a body search of all crew members, and assuming everyone was weapon-less and did as they were told, the rebels filed inside and began dismantling the Vega's cargo bay. Quinn cringed but kept her calm, arms folded tightly across her chest.

((Sorry for the long reply - lab practical of doom today.))

PostSubject: Re: Log 12 - Harvest   Log 12 - Harvest EmptySat Apr 02, 2011 8:28 pm

Oriana blushed as she realized the lady was obviously watching her tremors, and folded her arms across her chest in an attempt to lessen her compulsive motion. She inwardly cursed herself, making a mental note to ask the doctor about her condition. Ori was certain the woman was judging her, considering her smile was clearly fake. She was beginning to like this place less and less. And she hadn’t liked it much to begin with.

Oriana smiled over at Nar as he spoke of still being a kid. She hadn’t talked to him since the skirmish between him and Kasai. Truth be told, she wasn’t sure what to say to him. She’d left in what she felt was a slightly awkward and embarrassing situation, and wasn’t sure how to start up their friendship again. Her blush deepened as Javan put his arm around her shoulders. She attempted to wiggle a little to loosen his hold on her, or get away if she could. They were on a job, and she wasn’t about to let herself be restricted by manhandling.

But of course, people came pouring out of the settlements and came over to manhandle her anyway. She felt naked enough without her gun, and having someone half-heartedly pat her down while not meeting her eye was not her idea of a good time. If she wanted that, she would have gotten married.

She passed the pat down and was declared weaponless. Her eyes flicked between Quinn and the lady in charge, waiting for directions. She’s heard something about taking care of something with the doctor, but chose not to move… She’d been properly spooked by the light trained on Quinn’s forehead.

One look and a roundabout comment from Quinn did what Carmela and all her thugs combined could not do. Nar shut up at once.

He knew the cap'n didn't waste her breath saying things like that for fun. He stood impatiently as he was searched, not that there was much to searh with his lack of shirt. The few weapons he owned that were small enough were not nessicary for the routine maintaince he'd been doing just before landing, and he wouldn't be fooling anyone if he tried to hide his shotgun down his trousers.

Then he was left to idle in the cargo bay, waiting either for someone to march him off to inspect the engine or to be given leave to clean himself up and get dressed properly. His head still hurt from the black eye, reminding him to blame Shai for that, as loudly as possible when they had all settled down. He'd certainly gained a knack for getting himself mildly injured recently.

That thought caused him to glance at Ori. He'd seen her smile at him earlier, which had puzzled him further. He'd kind of accepted that she was mad at him since the 'duel' with Kesai, but none of it really added up. Maybe he could ask Shai about it, or the Doc.

Shaiyat's wince to the assumed relation was a bit more noticeable than Javan's own reaction, though it was clear neither brother proudly owned up to Carmela's accusation. "Can assure ya ma'am, the likeness 'tween us an' Maysen stops with looks." The pilot tried a small smile to reassure the woman though he was clearly uneasy about the whole situation. Javan nodded in agreement with Shai's statement, almost looking a little disgusted at the thought of being compared to his half-brother. He'd have protested further but Quinn's order to stay quiet kept him that way...at least for now.

Javan didn't seem offended by Ori moving away and he freely let her do so. He'd simply been trying to demonstrate just how much of a family the whole crew was. Javan was a showman, and certainly couldn't help but try and make the rag-tag crew appear to be more child-friendly.

In the chaos of the rebels dismantling the cargo bay a woman broke away from the crowd, making her way towards Nar. She was average height, dressed in plain browns like the others but the smudge of grease on her tan cheek and the heavy tool box she carried gave her away. "Someone told me the mechanic of this ship was in this direction?" She adjusted the cap she wore, whisps of her dark hair sneaking out behind her ears. She looked the shirtless mechanic over once, then around him as she figured she'd been sent this way by mistake. "I'd like to shake his hand, managing to keep an old rusty thing like this going ain't kid's stuff...and speakin' of kids I need to make sure this hunk-a metal will get the boss's kid across the black in one piece." He eyes moved again over Nar's shirtless torso with a growing smirk.

Skywake ran out as the crew was being searched. He was about seven, fluffy blonde hair as messy as his dust covered face. Trails of tan skin were reveled beneath as tears steamed down each cheek. "I'm not going!" He announced with all the force his childhood lungs could produce, attaching to Carmela's leg like a leech. He looked up at her with big bright green eyes swimming in more tears. "Not going!" He repeated again for good measure until the world around him slowly faded into view.

He took in Quinn, Shai and Xin as they were searched...and his little face crumpled in further distress. "I'm going with her?" He pointed a shaky hand at Quinn...he didn't wait for his mother's answer. "She's scary...he's scary. They are all scary!" His whispered voice raised back up to its high pitched whine. Oriana was the only one of the crew the young boy stared at openly before he burst into another round of tears and mumbled whines about being sent away.
.
Shai stayed close to Quinn's side, more openly cringing as he watched his pride and joy being torn through. "Think I should go....um...help?" His hands twitched at his side as he could hardly stand still, all he could imagine was a group of rebels in the cockpit, tearing it apart with everything else. He certainly had nothing to hide...it was just almost unbearable to watch.

Quinn shifted uncomfortably under the young boy's scrutinous stare and pointed finger. The last time she was anywhere near a child was when she was one herself, the lack of experience leaving her without a clue of what to say to sooth the boy's fears. "Oriana, make our guest feel at home. Xin and Shai, go 'n make sure the folks tearin' us apart ain't got any questions bout what they find. Nar, show the lady around 'n get what Vega needs in order."

Carmela had knelt down and was whispering to the young boy, one arm still full of gun while the other wrapped around him to hoist him up. At least the kid was good for a distraction.

"Kasai, stay with Javan til we take off. Try not to do anything stupid," she added, giving the mercenary a look before she went to supervise the rebels dismantling the airlock.

After the ship was squared away and Skywake settled in his room downstairs, the crew would take off to run Nar's little errand.

(we can skip right to it or wait til Nar deals with the mechanic, whichever you guys want. I'd like to get Egor's character in soon. =)

Oriana gave Quinn a small nod at the order, and looked to the scary lady to see if she would be allowed to approach her and her son. If given an indication that she could approach, she stepped forward until she was in front of the boy and knelt down, holding out a hand for him to shake and saying softly, “Hi, Skywake. My name is Oriana.”

Skywake had turned to watch her come closer, but turned his face away when she knelt in front of him. Oriana smiled to herself, then peered at the space behind his ear. “What’s this we have here?” she said, reaching towards his hair. As she pulled her fingers away, a huge copper coin came into view, the front stamped with a giant Chinese symbol for hope, the back printed with the head and neck of a horse. She held the coin out to Skywake in her palm. “This is my friend, Skywake, and he’s really scared about leaving home. Can you show him how brave you are and help him not be scared anymore?”

(If we ever want to get together for a game, I’m down. :] )

Nar felt for the kid really. He'd been fourteen when Zephyr had been abandoned. Kicked into space without his parents, and without any clue as to where he was really going or what the journey was like.

But right now he had this...woman to deal with. Whilst some might have enjoyed the attention, his head hurt and her manner generally annoyed him.

He was however conflicted over her praise. She clearly thought well of the condition of the little freighter, but then it seemed to be directed at someone -else- unless he was taking her too literally. Either way he wasn't in the mood to work it out.

"That'd be me." He said simply, turning and leading the way to the engine room, where the pair of them spent some time inspecting it. It turned out the dodgy part had no replacement on this world, but over the next few hours the pair of them were able to do a better patch job with extra materials. He found out the woman's name was Eva, but he dodged most of her more personal questions, prying as much information as he could about Skywake as he could. Soon enough both mechs gave the Vega the all clear, and it didn't take long for both the shuttle and Nar's little fighter to get the all clear too.

Eva left him with the suggestion that 'they could always use people like him out here if he ever got bored.' He deliberately forgot the words as soon as she was gone.

The information he learned about Sky would find their way to Ori in a written note, which he left in the common room with her name on when he knew it was her turn for chores. He still felt like she wasn't speaking to him, and couldn't think of any other way to tell her.

"Sky likes books, hoopball, apples, horses and hide and seek. Got some comics he'd probably like too. Always up for a game, let me know. -N"

Kasai almost scoffed at Carmela's question, looking her over a second time.
"You specifically? ... No," He paused, watching the rebels spill out from their hiding spots, and took another hit of the scent, "but I can smell misguided intentions up to about a hundred paces away."

He met whatever glare was sent his way by Quinn, staring back at her through his shades, and shut his mouth.
The merc 'passed' his search, but not without a few crass jokes to the duo checking him. As he was ushered inside he muttered something about prudes and never getting to have any fun. He assured the rebels they wouldn't find anything of interest in his room quite a few times before they left the cargo bay, and stood quietly as the hubbub went on around him.
The intruders would have been met with an odd sight in his room, which looked much more like an armory than a place where someone slept. But aside from nigh upon countless locked containers there actually wasn't anything of any intrigue... Unless you count said locked metal cases, of course.

He watched as the child ran in, taking a closer look at him now that they were inside. He cocked his head to the side, eyeing Skywake through his shades.
He couldn't feel sorry for him, not one bit. He couldn't have pity on any child who was getting specially ferried 'cross the 'verse on the whims of their still living parents. The most horrific truths of humanity and all existence had been thrust on him when he was eight, and he'd participated in live combat when he was only twelve. He had looked a Reaver in the eye at the tender age of fifteen. He had no sympathy for a child with a living family, and a high possibility of a normal life.

He eyed Quinn for a moment, raising a brow.
"Stupid's just what I do for fun, mon capitaine. I assure you I'm currently having no fun." He snarled and stuck his tongue out at her, then turned to Javan.
"I think she meant you, rockstar." He gave Shai's brother a strong pat on the back and then moved towards Carmela, getting as close as he could without causing a strain on the delicate situation. He opened his mouth, his words coming out smooth and charming.

"Ma'am, if I could be so forward, I'd like to ask a favor of you. There's a woman in a red coat in your compound back there, and if you'd be so kind as to tell her you saw a man with a purple dragon on his back I'd be thankful." He bowed politely and turned away, showing her the tattoo on his back. "Please try not to cause to much trouble, children need their parents to raise them... Not rebellions."

[[ bah... it's been so long. dislike playing catch-up ]]
