Shaiyat Vaal Oth'fyrr was born on the humble dusty planet of Ezra. His distant relatives had been among the first pioneers sent out to colonize the small world and make it somewhere worth living. They failed. The Oth'fyrr family joined up with other settlers in the end to create a small farming community that produced just enough food to get by. Over time, with a lot of patience and hard work the family started a mostly-successful farm that specialized in corn. Generation after generation worked on making their little piece of the planet a better and more prosperous place. Each baby step forward did nothing more than keep them more rooted to their tiny dust ball in the middle of nowhere. They lived, toiled under the sun and created the next brood of Oth'fyrr's to continue the line. This was the life Shaiyat was born into, and expected to stay in.
The young Shai was rather adept at the life he'd been given right from the start. He was the quiet obedient child, second oldest in a group of six siblings...full blood siblings anyhow. His father had more than just a wandering eye and his mother was far too forgiving. The number of children Anwar Vaal fathered was up for debate. In the end a larger family was an advantage in a profession that needed many hands and usually had too few. Around the age of ten Shai's older brother was hurt, leaving him with the job of dusting the corn fields with the small modified shuttle outfitted for such work. It was a long tedious job, but it thrilled the boy and began his fascination with flight. Never the outspoken child, when he did voice his interest in pursuing a career in a path in something other than farming was met with great skepticism and resistance. Piloting a little crop dusting-skiff and an Alliance battle cruiser were two different worlds.
This began Shaiyat's departure from his family's ideals and led him to disappear with only a short note left behind to his mother. He joined the Browncoats at the age of seventeen, meeting Quinn and cementing a friendship with her that would last past the war even though they were separated for a good few years. After hopping from one vessel to the next, learning what he could as he did so, Shai ended up aboard the Vega, and with the seven other crew members with rather prosperous despite being lead by a rather brash and spontaneous captian. Such qualities brought the crew down a dark path that Shaiyat would be hard pressed to go into details over. The missing right eye and deep scar that cut down his cheek, neck, chest and beyond told that the story certainly wasn't a happy one...and his current ownership of the Firefly brings into question just what happened to the rest of the crew.
Currently things were looking up for the pilot as he approached thirty. Reunited with his best friend, he was content to fly her and their small crew to wherever they could profit from, hopefully at the Alliance's expense.
Shaiyat stands just over six feet, with a wiry build he can hardly keep weight on. Tan skin points to an Arabic heritage, but a slanted blue eye show that he is fair from pure and suggest a mixing of Asian somewhere in his lineage. His hair, a dark brown, is currently worn tied in a messy ponytail most times, reaching to his shoulders and desperately in need of a haircut. He wears one of many stained and patched flight suits on most occasions, and always keeps his left 'eye' covered by a thick leather patch. He now has the word Vega tattooed across his right bicep in black flowing (yet manly) script.
